How much does an account cost in Dubai?

The costs of opening and maintaining an account in Dubai vary by bank and account type. Some accounts may involve monthly fees, minimum balance requirements and other charges.

As a rule, however, most banks require a minimum balance of between 3,000 and 5,000 AED (between 700 and 1,250 euros), which must be deposited into the account in advance. When opening a corporate account, the costs amount to around 22,000 AED (approximately 5,000 euros).

How can I open an account in Dubai?

In order to open a bank account in Dubai, you must first appear in person at a bank branch. In this context, you must also meet certain requirements before you are able to open a bank account at all. These may differ from bank to bank. In any case, you will need the following documents:

  • an Emirates ID
  • a valid resident visa
  • a valid passport
  • proof of residence (e.g. a tenancy agreement or utility bills)
  • the bank's account opening forms
  • optional: business documents in the case of opening a corporate account

You should also bear in mind that Dubai places great value on transparency and security, which is why all funds in your future account must have been legally acquired. There may therefore be restrictions on use if you are involved in gambling or engage in similar (illegal) activities.

These strict rules apply because Dubai must comply with international standards against money laundering and terrorist financing.

Good to know: Every bank in Dubai must be able to verify the origin of funds and the identity of its clients. You should therefore have all the necessary information and documents ready; otherwise you may be prevented from opening an account.

How to activate your account

Once you have submitted all the necessary documents and information to the bank of your choice, the bank will verify your identity and the authenticity of your documents. This may take some time.

It is also possible that additional information may be required from you during the processing period, so please make sure that you remain available for any queries. Otherwise, the verification of your account cannot be completed.

If the verification is successful, you will receive your account details within 4 weeks so that you can proceed with activating your account. The bank will provide you with specific instructions for this.

What are the differences between a private and a corporate account?

In Dubai, as everywhere else, you also have the option of opening not only a private account but also a corporate account. However, there are a few differences that you should be aware of.

When opening your corporate account, you require not only all the documents mentioned above, but also additional business documents. These include, for example, a business licence, a certificate of your trade registration or other relevant company documents.

Corporate accounts are subject to the same rules regarding money laundering and terrorist financing as private accounts. The banking institution will therefore also verify your business activity as well as the legitimacy of your company.

This also entails a longer processing period (approx. 6-8 weeks) for your documents, in order to ensure that they meet all requirements.

There may also be higher fee structures or minimum deposits when opening your corporate account. It is best to seek advice on this from an employee of your chosen bank.

Good to know: Difficulties can arise more frequently, particularly when opening a corporate account in Dubai. This is because many business activities carried out when a company is founded are “blacklisted” by banks, which prevents the opening of a corporate account.

As a result, you may be able to conduct business in Dubai but unable to generate income, because you do not have a bank account. This is why we at Danho & Partner get in touch with the banks even before you set up your company, in order to clarify whether your business activity is accepted by the respective institutions or not.

Based on this information, we will set up your company in compliance with the relevant guidelines, so that no problems can arise when verifying your account.

Conclusion: Which bank is the best in Dubai?

As you can see, both Dubai and the UAE offer an impressive selection of banks for entrepreneurs and investors. Which one is best for you, however, depends on your project and your preferences.

For example, do you use only the online banking service? In that case, Mashreq NEO Bank with its digital solution is probably the best option for you.

If, on the other hand, you value personal service and advice, Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank is the right partner for you.

If, however, you wish to open a corporate account, the services of Emirates NBD and Emirates Islamic Bank will be most useful to you. That said, we at Danho & Partner also open many corporate accounts with ADCB, which is why we can also recommend this bank in this context.
