Austrian nationals do not need a visa applied for in advance to travel to Dubai. For stays of up to 90 days, a passport is sufficient, and the entry stamp is issued free of charge at the airport. Things only get interesting where a trip becomes a stay – and there the Austrian route differs from the German one in several respects.
With an Austrian passport, you enter visa-free. The 90 days apply within a period of 180 days. If you spend 50 days in the Emirates twice within six months, you exceed the limit.
| Purpose | Visa required? |
|---|---|
| Holiday or business trip up to 90 days | no |
| Stay of more than 90 days | yes |
| Employment contract in the UAE | yes, via the employer |
| Your own company in the UAE | yes, via the licence |
| Studies | yes, via the university |
The purpose decides, not the duration. If you work, you need a visa – even for a two-week stay.
For Austrians, the procedure is the same as for everyone else relocating. The process is tied to the company or employer acting as sponsor.
Several of these steps require you to be present in person. Plan a trip of at least one week so that the medical examination, Emirates ID and bank account opening fall into the same window.
The Emirates ID is more than an identity card. Without it, practically nothing on the ground works beyond a stay as a visitor.
Activate UAE PASS immediately after receiving the card. It takes ten minutes and then speeds up every further process considerably.
Legalisation of documents. Marriage certificates, birth certificates and register extracts that you submit in the Emirates require the full legalisation route: certification in Austria, translation into English or Arabic, then the stamp of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This process takes weeks and is regularly started too late. If you want to bring your family, start it in parallel with the company formation – not afterwards.
Deregistration in Austria. Deregistering your residence (Abmeldung) with the registration office is mandatory when moving abroad and must be done within the statutory deadline. It is also one of the documents you will later use to prove that you have moved away.
Health insurance. Your insurance cover in Austria does not end automatically when you move away, but the obligation to pay contributions may cease. In the Emirates, local health insurance is mandatory and a precondition for the visa. Clarify the sequence so that no gap arises.
This is where the most important difference lies. Austria has a double taxation agreement with the Emirates; Germany does not.
The agreement contains an order of precedence for residence – permanent home, centre of vital interests, habitual abode, nationality. If there is a dispute, there is a rule that resolves it and a mutual agreement procedure between the tax administrations.
What matters, however, is the change in 2023: since 1 January 2023, Austria applies the credit method (Anrechnungsmethode) instead of the exemption method (Befreiungsmethode). If you remain resident in Austria, you can no longer exempt income from the Emirates. The visa alone does not shift your tax liability – that requires actually relocating your centre of life.
If you hold a valid residence visa, you can sponsor your spouse and children. A minimum income, a registered tenancy agreement and the legalised documents are required.
For the trip itself, it is straightforward: pack your passport, get the stamp, done. The step to residence is where the effort lies – and there the bottleneck is not the visa but the documents and scheduling.
From our work with Austrian clients: the most expensive mistake is clarifying the tax side only after the move. Since the switch to the credit method, it is no longer enough to hold a visa and continue living in Austria. If you discuss this point with your Austrian tax adviser beforehand, you avoid a correction later.
Our division of roles: we build and document the UAE side – licence, visa, Emirates ID, bank account and the evidence for the tax residency certificate. The Austrian side belongs with your adviser there.
As of 28 August 2026. Entry requirements change at short notice – the information from the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the UAE Embassy is authoritative.
