Alcohol is permitted in the United Arab Emirates, but regulated – and the rules differ between the emirates, between tourists and residents, and between arrival and the return trip. If you know them, you will have no problems. If you overlook them, you risk more than a fine.
For non-Muslim travellers aged 18 and over, the following applies on entry into the UAE:
| Goods | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Alcoholic beverages | 4 litres |
| Alternatively beer | 2 cases of 24 cans of up to 355 ml each |
| Cigarettes | 400 |
| Cigars | 50 |
| Tobacco | 500 grams |
| Gifts and souvenirs | up to AED 3,000 in value |
The quantities apply per person and exclusively for personal use. If you exceed them, you pay customs duty – on alcohol usually around 50 percent of the value of the goods. Quantities that appear commercial may be confiscated.
Two age limits that are often confused: import is permitted from age 18, purchase and consumption in licensed venues only from 21.
On these points, there is no discretion:
The point about medicines affects travellers from Germany most often. A painkiller from your home medicine cabinet can fall under narcotics law here. Bring your prescription and a doctor's certificate in English – and check critical active ingredients with the UAE Ministry of Health before you travel.
Drinking in public is prohibited: on streets, in parks, on public beaches.
Sharjah is completely alcohol-free. There, possession and consumption are prohibited for everyone – even if the bottle was bought legally in Dubai. If you are planning a day trip, leave it at the hotel.
Supermarkets do not sell alcohol. Sales go through licensed specialist shops, which are often located outside the large malls, sometimes in commercial areas or within hotel complexes.
| Offence | Possible consequence |
|---|---|
| Public drunkenness | fine, imprisonment, deportation |
| Drink-driving | licence withdrawal, imprisonment, fine |
| Import above the allowance | confiscation, customs duties, fine |
| Resale without a licence | imprisonment, deportation, entry ban |
| Supplying alcohol to Muslims | imprisonment, deportation |
A zero blood-alcohol limit applies on the roads. Residual alcohol from the night before is enough. After every visit to a bar, a taxi is part of the plan – that is not excessive caution but the only reliable rule.
On the way back, the EU travel allowances for non-EU countries apply – regardless of where you bought the goods. For travellers aged 17 and over:
The categories can be combined as long as no single one is exceeded. Keep your receipts and leave the bottles in their original packaging – you must be able to prove the value to German customs.
The misconception that most often becomes expensive: you may not bring back the four litres you were allowed to import into the Emirates. On the way back, the limit is one litre of spirits.
If you live in the Emirates, there are additional considerations. Drinking in private is permitted for non-Muslim residents; supplying alcohol to Muslims remains prohibited.
The difference from tourists lies in the consequences: for residents, an offence affects not only criminal law but also residence status. Cancellation of the visa, refusal of renewal or deportation are possible consequences – with everything that depends on it: company, bank account, tenancy agreement, your children's school place.
The rules are strict but predictable. If you stick to three points, you will in practice never come into contact with them: never drive yourself, never drink in public, take nothing to Sharjah.
From our client work: problems almost never arise from the quantity in your suitcase, but from behaviour. A loud scene in front of the hotel, an argument with a taxi driver, a minor rear-end collision – as soon as alcohol is involved, the situation shifts regardless of who was in the right.
For clients who live here, there is also the residence aspect. What would be an administrative offence in Germany can here jeopardise the entire structure you have built. That is the real reason why we raise the topic in the initial consultation.
As of 28 August 2026. Customs and alcohol regulations change – the information from Dubai Customs, the UAE authorities and German customs at the time of your trip is authoritative.
